# 1 Semeru Ascent was first carried out by C.F Clignett and Winny Brigita in 1838

C.F Clignett and Winny Brigita are geologists from the Netherlands. The two of them did the Semeru climb first in 1838 through Widodaren.

After successfully reaching the summit of Semeru, the two geologists then took the name Semeru to the blue continent. Then in 1911, Van Gogh and Heim climbed through the northern slope.

Then, a botanist from the Netherlands, Junhuhn, set foot on Semeru in 1945 through the Ayek-Ayek Mountain route, Inder-inder Mountain, and Mount Kepolo.

Even because of his admiration for Semeru and other mountains on Java, he wrote a book called Bergenweelde which means Luxury of the Mountains. Then it was published in the Netherlands.

When doing the Semeru climb, the climbers were forbidden to approach the crater of Jonggring Saloka because the Semeru crater emitted poisonous gas. The toxic gas contains sulfur dioxide (S2), carbon dioxide (Co2), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

One of the ferocious victims of Mount Semeru is Soe Hok Gie. UI activist and his friend Idhan Lubis lost his life after inhaling poisonous gas coming out of Jonggring Saloko's crater.

In the book, it is told that in the colonial period the Nongkojajar area in Pasuruan became a lodge (Dutch housing complex) and there lived a botanist who liked to bring in plants from abroad, including Verbena brasiliensis. The plant was allegedly entered into TNBTS due to human intervention at that time.

Ever named Fatchul Muftanin? He is a climber who received strict sanctions from TNBTS. After his unverified deeds which plucked edelweiss flowers carelessly, he was sanctioned with a life-long ban.

# 11 Mount Semeru issue new rules, you must know

As of October 1, 2017, Mount Semeru has inaugurated a new rule in which every climber must register online first. All requirements needed must be completed. The registration fee can also be paid by bank transfer.

# 12 It takes 20 km to reach the top

The total distance from Ranu Pani to the summit is 20 km. So, if you ride a motorbike with a speed of 60 km / h, the total needed reaches 20 minutes. While going up Mount Semeru takes approximately 3 days 2 nights.
